Very little is known about Burmese ivory sculpture. In spite of ample supplies there is no evidence that ivory objects were ever popular in Myanmar. This ivory monk is dressed in an untailored robe holding a rosary with a walking stick in his right hand and carrying a fan over his left shoulder. The figurine was probably used as a votive offering to one of the many temples in Burma.
