betel chewing box from Northern Thailand used to hold betel chewing paraphernalia. Betel chewing has been popular for centuries all over Southeast Asia. The fruit of the areca palm is cut in half and wrapped in a leaf of the betel piper vine and then mixed with ground lime and some oil. This box is typical of Northern Thailand with its hand carved design of abstract pattern.
