The cylinder is formed of cloth with lacquer and rolled to form a tube. A "seam" glued with lacquer runs along the inside. Two caps close the ends of the tube (one cap is glued stuck).The exterior has been elaborately painted with floral motifs. The cylinder was used to hold letters to or from senior monks to officials.
