Daruma is a symbol of good luck and protection in Japan. Daruma dolls are given to a new business, for a birthday or at the beginning of a new year. He is derived from an ancient Buddhist monk who lost the use of his arms and legs after meditating for nine years. This unusual piece is carved of pinewood with a burlknot carving of Daruma.
