KOREAN ALTAR CHAIR (GYOUI)

this unusual ancestor chair is part of a typical Confucian memorial altar which were considered to be the ancestors' homes. It was used to place the memorial tablet of the deceased and to burn incense. The chair would stand in front of a lower table with offerings to the deceased. The unusual size of this chair indicates a family of high social standing.
