Before Buddhism entered Tibet in the 7th century the image of the dancing skeleton was merely a representation of spirits inhibiting cemeteries. Over the centuries it has become a protective figure intended to remind the audience of the transcience of human life. The image has been shaped by hammering the malleable metal from the reverse side.
